PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an expansion joint for road surfaces well sufficiently resistant to abrasion and cracks, and excellent in durability. SOLUTION: An expansion joint 11 for roads is composed of a steel plate 12 for supporting loads and a pair of fixing steel plates 16 covered and united into one with a rubber material 17 covering them, and has a shearing deformation part 17a made of the rubber material 17 formed between the adjacent steel plates. In the rubber material 17 constituting the shearing deformation part 17a, breaking elongation (EB) is be 600% or more and the ratio of breaking elongation (EB) to tear resistance (TR) satisfies an equation (1): 7≤(EB/TR)≤16.
