PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control unit (ECU16) for an internal combustion engine capable of accurately calculating gain error in relation to output characteristics of a cylinder pressure sensor 21. SOLUTION: The ECU 16 acquires intake air pressure corresponding to cylinder pressure at a time of compression start of a diesel engine 1, namely intake air pressure detected right before an intake valve 10 closes an intake port 8 from an intake air pressure sensor 22, and calculates cylinder pressure corresponding to a non-combustion condition (standard cylinder pressure) excluding pressure rise due to in cylinder combustion of the diesel engine 1 with using a polytropic formula based on the intake air pressure. The gain error of the cylinder pressure sensor 21 can be accurately calculated by comparing the standard cylinder pressure and cylinder pressure detected by the cylinder pressure sensor 21.
