[Also in Division G5] Apparatus for supporting an element 28 relative to a plane surface (Figs. 1 and 2), e.g. on a disc 10, by the use of an air bearing, includes pistons 70 seated on a support 26, projecting slidably into the element or shoe 28 and subjected therein to air pressure above ambient (by way of a chamber 102), and means 98 to supply air (by way of a chamber 82 and orifices 84) at a pressure above ambient to the space between the plane surface and a surface 121 on the shoe 28 parallel to and spaced from the plane surface. The chamber 82 is of annular form and the shoe 28 has a vent 76, leading from the surface 121 to atmosphere through holes 112, 111 and recesses 109 and includes an adjustable cylindrical part 74 extending into an air bearing 122 in the support 26. Another element or shoe 32 is connected to the support 26 as shown, to have a surface 53 parallel to and spaced from another plane surface on the disc 10, air under pressure being supplied through a hose 56, a chamber 55 and orifices 60 to the space between the surface 53 and the disc 10. The chamber 55 is of annular form and the element 32 has a vent 52 leading from the surface 53 to the atmosphere. There may be a common source of pressure air for the chambers 82 and 102, and preferably for the chambers 82, 102 and 55. The part 74 includes a lens assembly receiving light from a cathode-ray tube 140 to be focused through the opening 76 upon recorded data on the disc 10 and then through the opening 52 to a photo-electric cell in the form of a photomultiplier tube 142, the arm 26 being axially movable by, for example, an electromagnetic linear actuator 33.
