The wind speed (U,Ue) is sensed and a control system operates an air flow regulator opening (K) and the ventilation fan motor speed (n) so that at high positive and negative wind pressures the fan is switched off (n a)and the regulator closed (Kz). At moderate positive wind speeds (Ue 3-Ue 2) the fan speed is slow (n min) and the regulator opening increases steadily to fully open (Ka) at a lower wind speed (Ue 1) as the fan speed steadily rises to a maximum (n max) until a low negative wind speed ((U 2) from which the maxima are held until the negative wind speed reaches a maximum value (U 1).
