PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display device capable of obtaining always optimum image luminance, by eliminating the influence due to undesired additional information, as much as possible. SOLUTION: The image display device comprises a liquid crystal panel 1 for displaying input video signal by using a back light source 6, feature value detecting means 11 and 12 for detecting the feature values of the input video signal, and light source control means 7 and 18 for dynamically variably controlling the light emission luminance of the backlight source 6, based on the feature values detected by the feature value detecting means 11 and 12. The feature value detecting means 11 and 12 extract the video signal of a prescribed region within a screen and detect the feature values of the extracted video signal. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
