PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow appropriate automatic stop control of an engine without causing a problem that lowering of purifying capability of exhaust gas and the like results from performing of the engine automatic stop control. SOLUTION: An engine starter is constructed to automatically stop the engine when automatic stop conditions of the engine previously set are met and to automatically restart the engine when engine restart conditions are met. This starter comprises a deceleration fuel cut control means 43 for stopping fuel injection at the time of deceleration and an automatic stop control means 44 for performing the engine automatic stop control even when the engine automatic stop conditions are met during performing the deceleration fuel cut control, puts an exhaust gas circulation passage in an open state and performs the engine automatic stop control in a state that intake air flow rates introduced into respective cylinders 12A-12D are reduced.
