<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display control in which the user understands the content of image data at a glance from a display, by conducting a magnified display of a character string having features from the beginning. <P>SOLUTION: OCR is conducted (S1012) for a selected image data (S1011); and an image structure information of a vertical writing, horizontal writing or the like and a characteristic part coordinate of a maximum character column or the like is obtained (S1013). If a character column detected is one, the character column can be displayed (S1014); but if a plurality of character columns are detected, one of the character columns must be selected to be displayed. Thus, whether the character column detected is one is decided; and if the answer is a Yes, the character column detected is extended (S1015). If the answer is a No, a character column nearest to the head of a sentence included in the image data among the character columns detected is extended (S1016).
