PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve reproduced image quality in the case of performing consecutive recording in an SD mode after an HD (high definition) mode. SOLUTION: An invalid track of null data is recorded for time corresponding to the maximum value of a VBV (video buffering verifier) delay after HD mode recording. Image data is recorded in the SD mode following the invalid track. The number of invalid tracks is determined by the maximum value of the VBV delay or the VBV delay time of the last picture of MPEG2.
