PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical waveguide type semiconductor optical switch which can increase the optical response speed. SOLUTION: The optical switch is obtained by improving an optical switch having an optical waveguide formed therein where an optical signal entering one end is branched to the way into two paths, and the transmission paths of the optical signal are switched by varying in the refractive index by carrier injection in the branched portion. The obtained optical switch has quantum dots or quantum wires inserted into the core layer, where the optical signal propagates or into the optical waveguide layer including the core layer.
