PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for suppressing oxidation while suppressing temperature drop of metallic material in a hot state, and a hot rolling mill using the same. SOLUTION: A steckel hot rolling mill comprises a rolling mill 101, a pair of furnace coilers 102 to coil and feed a strip 1 during the rolling by the rolling mill 101 in a heat-insulating manner, a descaling device 103 arranged in a vicinity of the rolling mill 101, and a down coiler 107 to coil the strip 1 rolled by the rolling mill 101, and further comprises a gas nozzle 11 arranged in the furnace coilers 102, a mixed gas feeder 12 to feed mixed gas containing alcohol gas and nitrogen gas from the gas nozzle 11, an alcohol detector 13 to detect the concentration of alcohol in the atmosphere in the furnace coiler 102, and a control device 14 to control the mixed gas feeder 12 based on the signal from the alcohol detector 13.
