A smoking article such as a cirgarette, or a smoke filter (3) or other component thereof, comprises a catalyst (3b) for the oxidation of carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide. The catalyst (3b) comprises gold, and an oxide o f zinc or titanium. Titania and mixed oxides of zinc and copper or aluminium a re preferred (TiO2, ZnO, ZnA1Ox or CuZnOx). The gold preferably comprises speci es in the metallic state (Au0), together with species in an oxiddise state (Au.delta.+).
