A method for operating a water heating system with a modulated calorific value heat producer (14) and a controllable fuel regulator, such as a gas armature. The head producer heats a heat store (1) via a secondary heat exchanger (9). To obtain higher energy efficiency the heat producer is only operated at its minimum capacity or 40 percent of its nominal power.
