In the present invention, there is disclosed an ophthalmic lens having ophthalmically compatible inner and outer surfaces, said lens being suited to extended periods of wear in continuous, intimate contact with ocular tissue and ocular fluids, said lens being selected from the group consisting of contact lenses for vision correction, contact lenses for eye color modification, ophthalmic drug delivery devices, and ophthalmic wound healing devices wherein the lens comprises a polymeric material being formed from: (a) at least one oxyperm polymerizable material being represented by a macromer or monomer containing siloxane or a macromer or monomer containing fluorine and (b) at least one ionoperm polymerizable material being represented by acrylate or methacrylate, acrylamide, methacrylamide, dimethylacrylamide, poly(alkyleneglycol) or N-vinyl pyrrolidone, wherein said polymeric material comprises a plurality of co-continuous phases, including at least one oxyperm phase forming an oxygen pathway and at least one ionoperm phase forming an ion or water pathway which phases extend continuously from the inner surface of the ophthalmic lens to the outer surface of the ophthalmic lens wherein the invented ophthalmic lens has an oxygen transmissibility of at least about 70 barrels/mm and wherein said lens has an Ionoflux diffusion coefficient of greater than about 2.6 x10e6 mme2/min. |
