A swivel joint for conduits comprises a coupling member 11 having a cylindrical outer surface 14 provided with an annular recess defining an inner raceway 16, a retaining ring 42 rotatably arranged in circumscribing relation to the surface 14 and having a plurality of circumferentially spaced apertures 44, an annular outer bearing 40 circumscribing the ring and having an outer raceway 70, balls 85 individually captured in the apertures 44 and engaging the raceways, a coupling member 20 coaxial with the member 11, and bolts 72 connecting the bearing 40 and the member 20. The bearing 40 is split on the diametral plane of the raceways and the parts 52, 54 are interchangeable when, due to axial forces F1, F2 imposed on the joint the raceway of the part 54 becomes impressed with dimples. The balls 85 are disposed in the ring 42 at randomly-spaced intervals. Greaseretaining seals 80 are arranged on either side of the ring 42. An annular seal 30 of resiliently flexible and compressible material provided with a facing 32 of polytetrafluoroethylene and an anti-extrusion ring 34 is received in a groove 27 of the member 20. The latter is provided with pressure relief ports 25. |
