The method involves receiving a configuration request, transmitted by a host, at a communication port of a switch (2) associated with a determined media access control (MAC) address relative to another host (1), during replacement of the host (1) by the former host. The request, having the address relative to the host (1) as an origin address, is relayed from the switch towards a dynamic host configuration protocol server (3). Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) a host of a communication network (B) a switch of a communication network.
