PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve strength against pressed force of a torque transmitting ball at an inboard side while over-quality on contact wear is avoided at an outboard side of a retainer. SOLUTION: In a constant velocity universal joint 1 arranged at an outboard side of a drive axle transmitting driving force to a wheel, the constant velocity universal joint comprises an outer joint member 2 having a plurality of guide grooves 3 on a spherical inner peripheral surface 2a, an inner joint member 4 having a plurality of guide grooves 5 on a spherical outer peripheral surface 4a, torque transmitting balls 6 respectively arranged on a plurality of ball tracks formed on guide grooves 3 and 5 opposite to both joint members 2 and 4, and a retainer 8 which is interposed between both joint members 2 and 4 and stores and retains the torque transmitting balls 6 in each pocket 7. An opening 8x for making the inner joint member 4 get on and off is formed on an end at an outboard side of the retainer 8, and an opening 8y with a diameter smaller than the diameter of the opening 8x at an outboard side is formed on an end at an inboard side.
