A compact progressive action damping system, e.g. for hydraulic cylinders especially in construction equipment, has a blind central bore (15) inside the piston and piston rod coaxial to a sleeve (14) fitted centrally over the hydraulic inlet in the bottom of the cylinder. The sleeve is progressively pushed into the blind bore as the piston moves towards its end setting. The bore is tapered to progressively reduce the hydraulic path until full closure, to provide a progressive damping effect. The blind bore is fitted with a removable liner (16) and the sleeve can be on a removable mounting (120 enabling the manufacturer to select different damping characteristics to fit into a standard cylinder.
