The wheelchair (2) is fitted with a footrest (7) divided into separate parts for each of the feet and joined laterally to the chair (2) with curved bars (32). A mechanism assembled of a cylindrical sleeve (4) accommodating a cylindrical joint element rotating around a vertical axle is positioned at both sides of the frame (21). When a spring supported cap (64) is lifted, the joint element is rotated moving the footrest (7) to the side and locking it in this position by a bolt engaging with a complementary opening until the user has entered or left the wheelchair (2).
