The invention relates to a process for the preparation of polyether polyols, which process involves: (a) contacting a phosphorus containing compound having at least one hydroxyl group with alkylene oxide to obtain alkoxylated initiator, (b) contacting the alkoxylated initiator with further alkylene oxide in the presence of a double metal cyanide complex catalyst.
