PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and method for driving a liquid crystal display device that is capable of improving picture quality and of stably representing brightness. SOLUTION: An apparatus for driving lamps of the liquid crystal display device is provided with many lamps for irradiating a liquid crystal panel with light and a lamp driving part which adjusts one of the duty ratio and the amplitude of an AC signal supplied to the lamps, in a scanning period before a picture implementing period of the liquid crystal panel by reference brightness of the liquid crystal panel and varies the amplitude and the duty ratio of the AC signal so that they correspond to the reference brightness.
