PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrochromic display element excellent in contrast when displaying in color or in black and white. SOLUTION: The electrochromic display element is composed of an electrode, an oxidized coloring film formed on the electrode, a solid electrolyte film formed on this coloring film, a color reduction film formed on this solid electrolyte film, and an electrode formed on this reduction film. The above solid polyelectrolyte film consists of a kind of an aromatic high molecular compound selected from the following materials containing proton conductivity substituent: polysulfone, polyether sulfone, polyether ether sulfone, polyariel ether sulfone, polyphenylene oxide, polyphenylene sulfide, polyphenylene sulfoxide, polyparaphenylene, polyarylene, polyether ketone, polyether ether ketone, polyether ketone, polybenzoxazole, polybenzothiazole, polybenzimidazole, polymide, polyamide, and polyamidoimide.
