Locating environment variables in non-volatile memory

In accordance with at least some embodiments of the invention, a system comprises a processor, a non-volatile memory coupled to the processor and containing one or more environment variables that preserve the configuration of the computer system, and a system read-only memory (ROM) coupled to the processor. The system ROM contains boot firmware and a table that identifies the location of the one or more environment variables in the non-volatile memory.
