Detecting and reporting sparks takes place in air stream (2), flowing through duct (1) of industrial installation and containing organic solid particles (3). Sparks etc. are detected by external fire detector (5) through optically transparent wall (4).Transparent wall comprises photocatalytic coating (7) and fire detector is spark alarm with UV light source. Preferably fire detector is linked to fire alarm central office (6). Duct may contain automatic extinguisher (10).
