PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce undesirable mixing of a reference beam with a measuring beam, in a measuring system using a retroreflector. SOLUTION: A polarization is maintained or converted using the retroreflector 100 to evade the undesirable mixing of polarization components, in measuring systems 200, 200B, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900 for separating the polarization components. The proper retroreflector 100 includes a coated corner cube reflector provided with a retardation plate having a delay axis set at non-zero angle separated by 45°with respect to a direction of a linear polarization component beam. The non-zero angle is able to be set on the spot, and set to make the polarization mixing minimum in the measuring systems. Alternatively, one or more of polarization operation elements 160, 170 control the polarization of a reflected beam to maintain or convert the polarization of an incident beam.
