Samples of the controlled atmosphere inside a tube 27 (Fig. 1) of flexible material, enclosing articles 17, are withdrawn by a device 41, and analysed. In the apparatus described gas, for example nitrogen, carbon dioxide, pure oxygen, inert gases, cyanide or chlorine gas, or an antiseptic powder, is fed via pipes 37 into a distributing head 30 (Fig. 5, not shown), which directs the gas or powder downstream into tube 27. The web is folded in about the articles by shoes 18 (Fig. 2, not shown) mounted on a carriage 20, vertically adjustable to the size of the article. The web is pulled tightly about the articles by inclined rubber rollers 19 and a longitudinal seam is formed by heated elements 22 and compressing rollers 26. The suction device 41 (Fig. 1) has a tube 42 which extends upstream to 42a, so that samples are withdrawn from the tube 27 just before it enters a package-separator unit 28 which draws the web 12 through the apparatus. At least part of the sample is fed via filters 44, 47 to a gas analyser 52, connected to a recording device 53. The remainder of the sample or other gas may be fed along a pipe 48 to a scrubber tube 49, which sprays the gas on to the underneath side of the articles 17 before they are positioned on the web 12. A second tube, not shown, may be provided at 42a to remove excess gas from the tube so that the units are packaged at a negative pressure. The film tube 27 may be flushed with. gas before starting, so that no packages are wasted. The invention is particularly applicable to cheese and meat, which may be packaged in moisture and/or gas permeable or impermeable packaging material, or coated foils.</p> |
