PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for detecting particles in a liquid constituted so as to eliminate the effect of a measuring error due to air bubbles in the measuring of particles in the liquid containing a large number of particles and air bubbles mixed therewith and capable of detecting only particles in-line, and a method for detecting particles in the liquid. SOLUTION: In the apparatus for detecting particles in the liquid, the sample liquid, which flows through the particle/air bubble detecting means 13 arranged on the upstream side of a detection cell 12, is irradiated with detection light from the detecting means 13. On the downstream side of the detection cell 12, an air bubble detecting means 14, which is constituted of an ultrasonic oscillation means 15 for irradiating air bubbles in the detection cell 12 with ultrasonic waves to contract the air bubbles, an image recognizing/processing means 17 for detecting a light emitting phenomenon at the time of contraction of the air bubbles and an air bubble analyzing means 18 for converting the air bubbles to the number/particle size of the air bubbles from the light emitting state detected by the image recognizing/processing means 17 is arranged.
