PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a planar light source for a scanner which uses only one lamp to obtain uniform illuminance. SOLUTION: The planar light source used for a scanner comprises a light-emitting element, a first light guide, and a second light guide. The light-emitting element is placed in a side direction of a scanning table facing a carriage module so as to give a source light. The first light guide is arranged on a first side of the light-emitting element so as to diffuse the source light as a first planar light to be given to the carriage module through the scanning table of the scanner. The second light guide is arranged on a second side, which is the opposite side of the first side, of the light-emitting element so as to diffuse the source light as a second planar light to be given to the carriage module through the scanning table of the scanner.
