This invention relates to methods and means for the production of recombinant proteins which comprise expressing in a host cell a nucleic acid encoding a fusion polypeptide comprising said recombinant polypeptide and a heterologous prosequence, and subsequently removing the prosequence to produce the recombinant polypeptide. Suitable prosequences include cytokine prosequences, for example Spatzle prosequences from Drosophila.
