PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably perform starting operation of a vehicle in switching a shift lever to start the vehicle. SOLUTION: On the basis of a detection signal of a position switch 34 for detecting the select position of the shift lever, the current select position of the shift lever is detected. When the current select position of the shift lever is in the P-range, the shift lever is estimated to be next switched to the R-range, and the variable speed ratio of a toroidal type continuously variable transmission is controlled to a value to output torque for starting the vehicle in the backward direction and traveling the same at a low speed from an output shaft 14 before the switching operation is completed.
