PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To appropriately perform exchanging of an oil adsorbent relating to a water-oil separating apparatus for separating oil sludge from draining liquid containing the oil sludge. SOLUTION: This water-oil separating apparatus constituted by providing a water-oil separating tank 1 with a trap pipe 2 opened with an inlet 6 into liquid and drains oil sludge water while separating the oil sludge through the trap pipe 2 has the oil adsorbent 12 loaded into the liquid of a prescribed level in an inlet path 17 of the trap pipe 2. An oil adsorbent basket 13 which obstructs the distribution of the liquid in the inlet path 7 of the trap pipe 2 when the amount of the oil adsorption of the oil adsorbent 12 is equal to or above the prescribed amount and is moved upward by the liquid level of the water-oil separating tank 1 is disposed. The apparatus is provided with a moving distance display device 18 which displays the moving distance of the oil adsorbent basket 13 in such a manner that the moving distance can be checked on the outside of the water-oil separating tank 1.
