The optical switch or sensor (2A) has a light source (6), a light sensor (10) and an evaluator (12) for signals from the sensor. There is a prism (4) between the light source and sensor, with a face (18) to deflect the incoming light beam (8) towards the sensor (10). Alternatively there can be a fibre optic to receive the reflected light, which is unsleeved to form a glow field adjacent to which the evaluator is mounted.
