PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a sealing structure between a shallow dish-shaped battery case and a lid of a rectangular secondary battery, whereby the volume of a power generation element housed in its inside is reasonably increased to increase the capacity of the battery. SOLUTION: The power generation element, the shallow dish-shaped oblong battery case formed of a metal plate, its lid and ring-like sealing packing are used as main constituent elements; on respective peripheral surfaces of the lid, a plurality of hook parts formed by cutting in three sides other than the lower side in a reversed U-shaped form and by projecting tip parts in the inside of the lid are formed; on respective peripheral surfaces of the battery case, hook catching parts formed by bending a metal plate in an opening part outward are formed over all the sides thereof; when the battery case is closed by the lid, the battery case is integrated with the lid by catching the hook parts by the hook catching parts; and most of the sealing packing is caught in a space formed by the insides of the peripheral surfaces of the lid and the hook catching parts of the case in a compressed form.
