PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hair cosmetic composition scarcely having unpleasant odor during application and residual odor to the hair after application, excellent in waving effect or straight effect and scarcely damaging the hair. SOLUTION: A reducing agent for hair cosmetics comprises a compound represented by formula (I): HS-CH<SB>2</SB>-CH(NR<SP>1</SP>R<SP>2</SP>)-CH<SB>2</SB>-OR<SB>3</SB>or its salts, wherein R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>and R<SP>3</SP>are each a hydrogen atom, a hydrocarbon group, a hydroxyalkyl group, a hydroxyalkoxy-alkyl group or C(O)R<SP>2</SP>(wherein R<SP>4</SP>is a hydrogen atom, a hydrocarbon group or a hydroxyalkyl group), and R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP>and R<SP>4</SP>may be the same or different. The hair cosmetic composition comprises at least one kind of the reducing agent for hair cosmetics.
