PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for treating waste water, by which the waste water, which is generated at a factory and contains silicon compounds such as water glass and silica gel, can be treated at a low cost. SOLUTION: This method for treating the waste water comprises the steps of: adjusting the pH of factory effluent; flocculating the pH-adjusted effluent by adding a flocculant; separating the flocculated effluent into a supernatant liquid and a flock-formed liquid by using a thickener; discharging the supernatant liquid; and filtering/separating the flock-formed liquid. When the silicon compound-containing waste water is treated, the silicon compound-containing waste water is separated from the factory effluent, a part of the flock-formed liquid is added to the silicon compound-containing waste water, the pH of the resulting silicon compound-containing waste water is adjusted to 5.8-8.6 and the pH-adjusted waste water is added to the flocculated effluent or the flock-formed liquid.
