Regenerated cellulose filaments, films &c. are produced by extruding a viscose containing a soluble viscose-coagulating salt of a strong base and a weak acid in a proportion insufficient to cause coagulation of the viscose prior to its extrusion into an acid-salt spin bath in the presence of a polyalkylene glycol of average molecular weight at least 400, or a derivative thereof, and a water-soluble hydroxy fatty acid. The viscose coagulating salt may in particular be a soluble sulphide, but may alternatively be, for example, sodium acetate or sodium phosphate. The hydroxy fatty acid preferably contains 2 to 6 carbon atoms in the molecule and the hydroxy group is preferably in the alpha position. The viscose coagulating salt is preferably a salt of a metal, particularly sodium. The term "soluble" as applied to these salts refers to their being soluble in viscose, irrespective of their solubility in water. The viscose coagulating salt is added only to the viscose. The glycol (or a derivative thereof) and the hydroxy fatty acid may be added to the viscose or to the spin bath or both. The viscose preferably has a salt point of about 7À5 to about 9À0. The spin bath may contain a zinc salt in a concentration of preferably about 4 to 8% or more. If a derivative of a polyalkylene glycol is used it may be an ether or ester derivative of a fatty acid, the derivative having a polyoxyethylene chain containing at least 25 ethylene oxide and/or propylene oxide groups.
