A router (20, fig 1) comprises a base (24, fig 1), a motor housing (28, fig 1) supported by the base and movable relative to the base, where at least one of the base and th<WC 1>e motor housing define a depth adju<WC 1>stment column (146, fig 2) having an open end (150, fig 2). A depth adjustment mechanism (22<WC 1>4, fig 2) is supported in the depth adjustment column and is operable to adjust the cutting depth of the tool element (31, fig 2), and a flexible shield 336 is connectable to the base in a position to cover the open end and allow access to the depth adjustment mechanism through the open end. Preferably the flexible shield includes at least one perforation 340. When the router is operated in an inverted position the flexible shield inhibits movement of debris through the open end and into the depth adjustment column. An adjustment member 292 may be insertable through a perforation to allow adjustment of the cutting depth of the tool element.
