A vehicle control system for a vehicle 50 adapted to facilitate exiting of ruts includes an active steering system 40 having a steerable wheel 12 defining a steering angle 20, a steering wheel 16 providing a driver input control angle, a coupler component 46, an actuator component 14, a controller 18 and a sensor component 60. The active steering system 40 can selectively vary the steering angle 20 relative to the driver input control angle. The controller 18 is configured to determine if the vehicle 50 is in a rut based at least in part upon an expected vehicle yaw angle and an actual yaw angle and to provide a braking signal to brake a first side 54 of a vehicle more than a second side 53 to generate a yaw torque to facilitate exiting from the rut, pothole, groove or ditch.
