The press, especially for the stamping of sheet metal, has a press frame with a press platten to hold a bottom tool (12) and in which a plunger (9) is movably mounted and communicates with a drive unit and supports an upper tool (11). A controllable sheet holding device (21) presses against the bottom tool during the forming process and is supported by one end on the plunger and by its other end on the workpiece. The sheet holding device has a control unit which influences the force exerted by the sheet holding device acting between the plunger and the workpiece.
