<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely enhance the output of a fuel cell system. <P>SOLUTION: A membrane electrode assembly 10 has an electrolyte layer 11, an air electrode 13 joined to one side of the electrolyte layer 11, and a hydrogen electrode 12 joined to the other side of the electrolyte layer 11. The air electrode 13 is comprised of an air electrode reaction layer 13a joined to one side of the electrolyte layer 11 and an air diffusion layer 13b joined to the no-electrolyte layer of the air electrode reaction layer 13a and diffusing air to the air electrode reaction layer 13a.
