PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydraulic damper for seismic response control, which can restrain a telescopic motion of a piston rod and a rotating motion of a ball storage member of a ball joint, until the hydraulic damper for seismic response control is vertically mounted on a building, and a mounting method for the hydraulic damper. SOLUTION: This hydraulic damper 30 for seismic response control is equipped with the piston rod 17 which protrudes from a hydraulic cylinder 16 so that the length of this protrusion can be increased/decreased, and the ball joints 26A and 26B, both the ends of which have ball members 26c and where rotatable ball storage members 26d are provided around the ball members; and the hydraulic damper 30 is mounted on a building so that the telescopic direction of the piston rod 17 can be set to be a vertical direction or a direction inclined with respect to the vertical direction. Characteristically, the hydraulic damper 30 is equipped with restraining members 32 and 33 for restraining the telescopic motion of the piston rod 17 and the rotating motion of the ball storage member 26d.
