PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a voice communication system which realizes high quality in broadband voice communication and also compatible with voice communication over a public telephone network. SOLUTION: A voice communication apparatus 10 includes a filter 12 which is connected to a general telephone set or to a broadband telephone set and interposes in communication with a public telephone network 5 for converting a signal into fulfill its signal condition. Furthermore, there are included a telephone set class identification section 14 for identifying a class of a connected telephone set 2A and a circuit 16 for changing a sampling frequency for sampling an analog signal at least from the telephone set in accordance with the identified telephone set class. Thus, high quality is realized in broadband voice communication. A telephone set accommodating apparatus 3A accommodates any telephone set having a different valid communication band and includes a telephone set class identification section 100 for identifying the kind of the accommodated telephone set 2A in a certain timing of a call sequence. The telephone set class identification section 100 identifies the kind of the telephone set 2A from a band component contained in a signal from the accommodated telephone set 2A, a state of intermittent transmission in a predetermined frequency using the telephone set 2A or telephone set characteristics of the telephone set 2A.
