PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a solid state imaging device of high S/N which is suitable for both still image photographing and motion picture recording. SOLUTION: The solid state imaging device comprises a pixel 1 composed of a plurality of pixels that are arrayed in two dimension and output pixel signals that have been photoelectric-converted. It has a first mode in which pixel signal is read for each pixel, and a second mode in which a plurality of pixel signals are added together for reading. A gain variable line amplifier 2 reads the first mode and the second mode at different gain. The gain variable line amplifier 2 comprises a plurality of output lines through which the output signals from a plurality of pixels arranged in a line are outputted with at least one connected to each of the plurality of output lines.
