PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a solid state imaging element capable of eliminating variation of a reference signal used to correct an output signal. SOLUTION: The solid state imaging element is equipped with a plurality of photodiodes 1 some of which are shielded from light, a vertical CCD 2 which reads signal charges out of the photodiodes 1 and vertically transfer them, a horizontal CCD 5 which receives the signal charges transferred by the vertical CCD 2 and horizontally transfers them, a signal sweeping-out drain 8 to which excessive signal charges of the horizontal CCD 5 are swept out, and an overflow drain gate 7 which forms a potential barrier between the horizontal CCD 5 and signal sweeping-out drain 8. The overflow drain gate 7 forms no potential barrier between a portion or the whole of the horizontal CCD 5 receiving the signal charges of the shielded photodiodes 1 and the signal sweeping-out drain 8.
