PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a latch retaining box into which a latch can be plunged even if a door is warped, and which prevents the occurrence of a door rattle when the latch is plunged into the latch retaining box. SOLUTION: This latch retaining box is equipped with a retaining box body 12 with a recess 14 into which the latch 4 is to be plunged, spacers 20 and 30 and a coiled spring 43, which are housed in the recess 14 of the box body 12, and a retainer plate 16 which is superposed on the box body 12. The spacers 20 and 30 are arranged on the outdoor side of the recess 14 so as to fill a gap between a back edge 17a of a lead-in hole 17 and the latch 4 in a state wherein the latch 4 is plunged into the recess 14 of the box body 12. The spacers 20 and 30 are urged to the side of the door 1 by the coiled spring 43, and can advance/retreat in the depth direction of the recess 14 along a columnar member 40 which serves as a guide.
