PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus convenient for use, which is easily positioned when reading and easily takes in a necessary image. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus for reading an image on an image read medium is provided with; an image read means for reading image data; a movement detection means for detecting movement of the image read means; a movement information storage means for storing movement information during movement of the image read means on the image read medium, just after detecting the movement; a movement information comparison means for successively comparing movement information of the moving image read means and movement information stored in the movement information storage means; a means for discriminating a change of movement information; a means for presetting a plurality of functions which the image reading apparatus has; and a means for switching preset functions on the basis of a determination result.
