PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new fibrous carbon material which functions as a hydrogen storage material, and a method for producing the same. SOLUTION: A composite fiber, in which metallic layers and carbon layers are laminated in a growth ring-like state, is formed by repeating a process for forming a metallic layer on the carbon layer of the surface of a tubular carbon fiber and a process for depositing a carbon layer on the metallic layer by a chemical vapor phase growth method utilizing the metallic layer as a catalyst. Thereafter, the metal layers constituting the composite fiber are removed. Thereby, the carbon material, in which a plurality of tubular carbon fibers are laminated in a nest shape and cavity layers are formed between respective carbon fibers along the fiber axis, is produced.
