PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compressed activated carbon block which can capture bacteria with the size of≤1μm such as colon bacilli with the size of 0.5 to 1μm, pseudomonas aeruginosa with athe size of 0.5 to 0.8μm and virus with the size of 0.01 to 0.2μm. SOLUTION: Crushed charcoal 3 having a grain size range of 10 to 100μm is granulated with clay 6 essentially consisting of SiO<SB>2</SB>and Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>under wetting conditions, is fired, then is sieved to produce granulated charcoal 2 having the main grain size distribution in the vicinity of 50 to 200μm. The granulated charcoal 2 is heated and press-molded with polyethylene 4 as a binder into a hollow columnar shape, thereby forming the compressed activated carbon block 1 provided with pores having a wide and equalized distribution in the range from 10<SP>-3</SP>to 10μm.
