PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the NOx conversion from dropping by a ternary catalyst when restarting after an idle stop. SOLUTION: When idle stop conditions are established, fuel is cut and an EGR control valve is fully opened, thus reducing oxygen concentration in intake air by reflux exhaust gas. The intake air in which the oxygen concentration has dropped is supplied to the ternary catalyst by utilizing the tentative inertia rotation of an engine after the fuel cut, and the catalyst prevents oxygen from becoming excessive.
