PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface modifier for an inorganic solid that greatly improves the affinity of an inorganic solid for a medium. SOLUTION: The surface modifier for improving the organic affinity of the surface of an inorganic solid comprises a polyether represented by formula (IV). An inorganic solid whose surface is at least partly coated with the surface modifier is provided. A synthetic resin composition, a rubber composition, a wax composition, a liquid composition and a flame retardant resin composition each containing the surface modifier and an inorganic solid are provided. A method for modifying the surface of an inorganic solid with the surface modifier is provided. In formula (IV), R<SP>1</SP>is a 1-50C alkyl group which may have a substituent; Y is a polymerization unit derived from a monomer such as a 2-22C alkylene oxide, a 3-perfluoroalkyl-1,2-epoxy propane, a phenyl glycidyl ether or the like; p is a number of 4.8-2,000,000; and q is 0 or a number of 1-100,000.
