PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable thermal transfer printer capable of printing images on both faces at a high speed. SOLUTION: This thermal transfer printer for printing an image on a recording medium by thermal transferring comprises a platen roller, thermal heads 101, 106 which are disposed on a position opposite to the platen roller to push the platen roller by means of an elastic member, two sets of image printing means for printing images on front and rear faces of the recording medium, retracting means (201-217) for retracting the thermal heads 101, 106 from the platen roller by manual rotation of holding members 103, 107 holding the thermal heads 101, 106, and a drive means for rotating the platen roller. The retracting means (201-217) couple two holding members 103, 107 holding the thermal heads 101, 106 respectively, with each other.
